Revitalizing Sound at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church

Project Overview:

  • Church Name: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church
  • Location: North Pudukkad, Mullassery, Thrissur, Kerala
  • Establishment Year: 400 A.D.
  • Objective: To install a sleek, high-performance sound system that enhances worship without obstructing the altar.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a historic site with deep roots dating back to 400 A.D., sought to position itself as the best-sounding church in Thrissur. The church committee’s vision was to create an acoustic environment that would offer clear and reverberant sound, enhancing the spiritual experience for the congregation. Their goal was to install a system that not only provided exceptional sound quality but also maintained the aesthetic integrity of the church, especially around the altar, which is central to worship.

The Challenge

During the initial site visit, the church was still under construction, which presented unique challenges. The acoustic treatment was planned only for the ceiling, leaving the floors lined with highly reflective vitrified tiles that could cause sound reflections. The church needed a sound system that would balance these acoustical limitations and deliver crystal-clear sound across the large space.

The church committee turned to Zacs and Phils, a reputable system integration team known for their expertise in church audio installations. To ensure optimal sound distribution, the team conducted an EASE simulation, an industry-standard tool for sound and acoustics. This allowed them to test and fine-tune the placement and requirements of the speakers, ensuring complete coverage and eliminating any potential acoustic issues before the final installation.

The Solution

After thorough analysis, the Tannoy VLS 30 column speakers with Focused Asymmetrical Shaping Technology (FAST) were recommended. The Tannoy VLS 30 columns were ideal for this project because they are designed to tackle acoustically and architecturally sensitive environments, making them perfect for the church’s large, reverberant space. They provided excellent clarity for both background music and speech reinforcement, ensuring that worshippers could hear every word and note with precision.

The system also included Audio Technica (AT) microphones, a Behringer Digital Mixer, processors, Turbosound speakers, and amplification powered by Labgruppen. This combination was carefully selected to provide an optimal balance of vocal clarity and musical depth, tailored to the church’s needs while respecting the budget.

Results

The result was a sleek, unobtrusive audio system that delivered powerful and clear sound throughout the church. The Tannoy VLS30 columns ensured that every member of the congregation, regardless of their location in the church, could experience the service with high clarity and precision. The system offered a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics, keeping the altar area free from bulky equipment while enhancing the overall worship experience.

Visitors to other venues installed by Zacs and Phils were already familiar with the superior sound quality of Tannoy speakers, and their reputation was further strengthened by this project. The integration of AT microphones, Behringer mixers, and Turbosound speakers made sure that both vocal and musical elements were delivered with a richness and clarity that exceeded expectations.

Client Feedback

The church committee was thoroughly impressed with the seamless integration and superior audio performance. The solution not only met but exceeded the church’s requirement for a powerful, budget-friendly sound system that maintained the architectural beauty of the space.

This project demonstrates how modern sound technology can be effectively blended into historic and architecturally sensitive environments, ensuring a spiritual and immersive worship experience without compromising on the aesthetics of the sacred space
